"Scary Monsters" es el decimocuarto álbum de David Bowie, el último bajo el sello RCA y el primero tras su conocida trilogía de Berlín. Publicado el 12 de septiembre de 1980, supuso la vuelta de Bowie al éxito y de nuevo se aupó en el primer puesto en las listas de ventas.
En el álbum se incluye una canción titulada "Ashes to Ashes", en la que reaparece la figura del Mayor Tom, el ficticio personaje creado por Bowie para el álbum "Space Oddity" de 1969. El tema se publicó como sencillo y alcanzó el número uno en Reino Unido. El vídeo de este tema, dirigido por David Mallet, resultó muy innovador en su momento y en aquel entonces fue el videoclip más caro grabado hasta la fecha. En la grabación participaron algunos miembros de la tendencia de los nuevos románticos, como Steve Strange, líder de la banda Visage.
Producido una vez más por el dúo formado por David Bowie y Tony Visconti, el álbum resultó menos experimental y más comercial. Los temas eran más trabajados y se dejó menos margen para la improvisación.
Bowie contó con la colaboración del guitarrista estadounidense y compositor de bandas sonoras Chuck Hammer, quien agregó sintetizadores de guitarras. Robert Fripp regresaba con las cuerdas y Roy Bittan, el pianista de Bruce Springsteen, se incorporó a las grabaciones.
