"Earthling" es el vigésimo álbum de estudio del artista británico David Bowie. Lanzado originalmente en febrero de 1997 por Arista y Virgin, fue coproducido por Bowie, Reeves Gabrels y Mark Plati. Las grabaciones se realizaron en los estudios Mountain en Montreux (Suiza) y en los Looking Glass Studios de Nueva York, tras la finalización del la gira "Outside Tour". Con un sonido con fuertes influencias electrónicas, el álbum tuvo un mejor comportamiento comercial que su predecesor "Outside". La recepción de la crítico mejoró con respecto a otros trabajos del artista de años anteriores, valorándose positivamente que tuviera algo de la esencia original y de la finura musical de Bowie.
Dos de los videos musicales de "Earthling" fueron dirigidos por la cineasta italo-canadiense Floria Sigismondi ("Little Wonder" y "Dead Man Walking"), mientras que el dúo de directores formado por Nic Goffey y Dominic Hawley hicieron lo propio con "I'm Afraid of Americans", un vídeo que resultó nominado para un premio MTV Video Music Award.
Cinco fueron los sencillos de este álbum "Earthling". "Telling Lies" fue lanzado a través de internet el 4 de noviembre de 1996. Este sencillo fue seguido por "Little Wonder", el 27 de enero de 1997.
El tercer lanzamiento fue "Dead Man Walking", estrenado el 14 de abril de 1997 y con el que Bowie alcanzó el puesto 32 en las listas británicas. El tema incluye un riff de guitarra que Bowie heredó de Jimmy Page en la década de los sesenta y que el propio Bowie había ya utilizado en el tema "The Supermen" (1970).
"Seven Years in Tibet" se publicó el 18 de agosto de 1997, producido por David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels y Mark Plati. El título pensado originalmente para esta canción era "Biscuit Lady", aunque la reescritura del tema llevó a cambiar el título. Trata sobre un joven monje tibetano que acaba de recibir un disparo, una historia influída de algunas charlas del Dalai Lama a las que acudió Bowie y por su lectura del libro "Siete años en el Tíbet", del que tomó el título. La canción no tiene ninguna relación con la película del mismo título estrenada en 1997 y que estaba basa en ese mismo libro.
"I'm Afraid of Americans" se estrenó el 14 de octubre de 1997 y fue coescrita por Bowie junto a Brian Eno durante las grabaciones de "Outside", aunque no se dio a conocer hasta que una remezcla del tema se presentó en la banda sonora de la película "Showgirls" (1995), dirigido por Paul Verhoeven.
