"Death Magnetic" es el noveno álbum de estudio de Metallica, publicado el 12 de septiembre de 2008 a través de Warner Bros. Records. El álbum fue producido por Rick Rubin, conocido por haber colaborado anteriormente con bandas como Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cult, Tom Petty y otros muchos. Este fue el primer trabajo de Metallica desde "... And Justice for All" (1988) que no contó con la producción de Bob Rock y el primero en contar con su nuevo bajista, Robert Trujillo, contratado tras el abandono de Jason Newsted a raiz de las grabacione de su anterior álbum, "St. Anger".

"Death Magnetic" fue grabado en diferentes estudios del condado de Los Ángeles, entre marzo de 2007 y mayo de 2008. El álbum, supuso un cambio radical en lo que respecta a su anterior trabajo, en lo que sería una vuelta a las raíces de Metallica y del thrash metal, con composiciones más complejas y largos solos de guitarra a cargo de Kirk Hammett y James Hetfield. También se incluye la primera pieza instrumental de Metallica, "Suicide & Redemption", desde el álbum "... And Justice for All".

Con este álbum, Metallica se convirtió en la primera banda en lograr colocar cinco álbumes de estudio consecutivos como número uno en el Billboard 200 de Estados Unidos. El trabajo recibió numerosas reseñs positivas, a pesar de ser criticado en algunos aspectos técnicos. Recibió seis nominaciones a los premios Grammy (cinco en 2009 y una en 2010), de las que consiguió ganar tres, entre ellas la de la Mejor Interpretación de Metal por "My Apocalypse".

Tres fueron los sencillos seleccionados, "The Day That Never Comes" (lanzado el 21 de agisto de 2008), "All Nightmare Long" (15 de diciembre de 2008) y "Broken, Beat & Scarred" (3 de abril de 2009).
