"Up All Night" es el primer álbum de estudio en la discografía de One Direction, lanzado por el sello Syco Records el 11 de noviembre de 2011 en Irlanda y Reino Unido, seguido por el lanzamiento mundial durante 2012. One Direction salió de la pequeña pantalla, de la temporada 7 de la versión británica del programa de televisión "The X Factor". Tras quedar terceros en el concurso, comienzan a grabar este álbum debut apenas cuatro meses después de finalizar su aventura televisiva. Las grabaciones se realizaron en Suecia, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos, con diferentes compositores y productores y temas que tratan de la juventud, el desamor y las relaciones.
Las críticas fueron muy positivas y se valoró la combinación melódica y los sonidos pegadizos. El debut en las listas fue espectacular, alcanzando el número dos en Reino Unido, convirtiéndose en el álbum de debut más vendido en Reino Unido en 2011.
En Estados Unidos, "Up All Night" debutó en el primer puesto de la lista Billboard 200 y fue número uno en más de una docena de países. "What Makes You Beautiful" fue lanzado por Columbia Records en los Estados Unidos el 14 de febrero de 2012, país en el que se convirtió en el sencillo de un artista o grupo británico con mejor debut en la historia de la lista Billboard Hot 100 desde 1998. En concreto, alcanzó el cuarto puesto, a la par que encabezaba la lista de Hot Dance Club Songs. Las ventas subieron como la espuma, hasta los casi cuatro millones de copias de este sencillo, sólo en Estados Unidos y cinco a nivel mundial, ganando además un premio BRIT al Mejor Sencillo Británico en 2012.
El sencillo, "Gotta Be You", fue lanzado como el segundo single del álbum en Irlanda y el Reino Unido en noviembre de 2011. El segundo single alcanzó su punto máximo en las listas de sencillos de Irlanda y Reino Unido en el número tres.
Por su parte, "One Thing" fue lanzado el 6 de enero de 2012 como segundo sencillo en varios países europeos y en el Reino Unido como tercer sencillo el 13 de febrero de 2012. La canción también sirvió como segundo sencillo del álbum en Estados Unidos.
