"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" es el primer álbum en la discografía de Pink Floyd, la banda británica de rock que, de esta manera se vestía de largo para su presentación oficial tras haber actuado antes con diferentes nombres.
En 1967 deciden profesionalizarse y firman un contrato con el sello EMI. El resultado fue este primer álbum, lanzado el 5 de agosto de 1967 y que vino precedido por la publicación el 11 de marzo de un sencillo titulado "Arnold Layne", que trataba sobre un travesti cleptómano.
Su segundo sencillo, "See Emily Play", lanzado en mayo del mismo año, fue escrito por el líder de la banda, Syd Barrett, tras el concierto denominado Games for May que la banda ofreció en el Queen Elizabeth Hall el 12 de mayo de 1967. El sencillo alcanzó el sexto puesto en las listas de éxitos y auguraba una buena recepción para el álbum.
Cuando comenzaron las sesiones de grabación, Pink Floyd ya era conocido como un grupo psicodélico, entendiéndose como tal a los grupos que crean canciones para mostrar sus experiencias con el LSD. Curiosamente, Barret fue el único miembro de la banda que confesó abiertamente tomar dicha sustancia.
Con libertad total por parte de EMI, Pink Floyd pudo crear su propio sonido sin ataduras. Se encerraron durante tres meses en los estudios de la discográfica en Abbey Road, contando con la colaboración del productor británico Norman Smith y el ingeniero de sonido Pete Bown.
El resultado fue un álbum con fuerte presencia de ecos y reverberaciones, con temas largos e improvisados, junto a temas más cortos interpretados por Syd Barrett, quien fue aumentando su consumo de LSD a medida que pasaban los días, a la vez que comenzaba a entorpecerse su relación con el resto de miembros.
Finalmente, fueron ocho los temas presentados por Barrett en este álbum, junto a dos colaboraciones instrumentales acreditadas a toda la banda y un tema aportado por Roger Waters ("Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk").
Este fue el primer y único álbum de Pink Floyd en el que Syd Barrett actuó como líder de la banda. Los problemas mentales que le ocasionaron las drogas y la deriva de su personalidad obligaron al resto de la banda a prescindir de él un año después, siendo sustituido por el guitarrista David Gilmour.
