Sobre el álbum
El debut de la banda estadounidense Guns N' Roses llegó con este primer álbum titulado "Appetite for Destruction", lanzado el 21 de julio de 1987 bajo el sello discográfico Geffen. El álbum lleva la marca del estadounidense Mike Clink, productor con el que la banda grabó cinco discos que obtuvieron unas ventas conjuntas de alrededor de 90 millones de copias.El estreno discográfico de los Guns N' Roses se aupó al primer puesto de la lista Billboard 200, siendo el debut que más ventas había conseguido hasta entonces, logrando unas ventas a nivel mundial de 30 millones de discos y estando considerado por la crítica como uno de los mejores trabajos de rock de la historia. En 2018 se lanzó una caja remasterizada que incluía también un libro con fotografías y litografías inéditas de la banda.
Las canciones del álbum fueron escritas en las giras que Guns N' Roses ofrecía en locales pequeños, cuando la banda trataba de darse a conocer. Algunos de los temas compuestos en aquella época fueron incluídos en este álbum, pero otros tuvieron que ser rescatados en posteriores trabajos.
Tras varias semanas de ensayos, comenzaron las grabaciones en los californianos estudios Rumbo Recorders, en Canoga Park. El guitarrista Slash y el vocalista Axl Rose trabajaron codo con codo duramente junto al productor Mike Clink, en busca del sonido que identificara al grupo. En un principio grabaron las pistas de los intrumentos de forma individual, para al final unirlo todo. Axl quiso también que las voces sonaran perfectas y las sesiones se alargaron en intensas jornadas que terminaron agotando a los miembros del equ.
Algunas de las canciones reflejan las experiencias peronales y las vivencias de los miembros de la banda, incluídas las giras por los clubes musicales cuando eran aún unos desconocidos. También sobre sus primeras experiencias con las drogas y sus primeros roces con la ley.
El primer sencillo, "It's So Easy", fue lanzado en Reino Unido el 15 de junio de 1987 e incluía en su cara B el tema titulado "Sr. Brownstone". Escrita originalmente por Duff McKagan y West Arkeen como una canción hippie, Slash decidió que debía sonar como un tema de rock, por lo que la dotó de más potencia de guitarra. Las letras tratan sobre sus primeras vivencias como banda musical, cuando apenas tenían dinero pero tampoco les preocupaba demasiado.
"Welcome to the Jungle" es el segundo sencillo, lanzado el 28 de septiembre de 1987 bajo la producción de Mike Clink. La canción fue escrita por Axl Rose en la ciudad de Seattle, donde se encontraba visitando a un amigo. Allí se le ocurrió la idea de una canción que tratara de mostrar una gran ciudad, Los Angeles, como una jungla.
El vídeo, dirigido por el realizador Nigel Dick, nos muestra a Axl Rose apeándose un autobús que le deja en Los Angeles, donde acaba de llegar. Tras rechazar una oferta para comprar droga, Axl camina por la ciudad y se encuentra con un escaparate lleno de televisores donde se muestran videoclips de la banda tocando. Al final, vemos al cantante convirtiéndose en un habitante más de la ciudad, adoptando su forma de vestir y actuar.
"Sweet Child o 'Mine", el tercer sencillo lanzado del álbum, apareció el 17 de agosto de 1988 en Estados Unidos, país en el que alcanzó el puesto número uno en la lista Billboard Hot 100. La música surgió de la guitarra de Slash durante unos ensayos improvisados, mientras que las letras las escribió Axl al escuchar las melodías. En el vídeo se podía ver a los miembros de la banda durante un ensayo. En dicho vídeo, que obtuvo gran repercusión en la cadena MTV, aparecen en diferentes escenas las novias de todos los miembros del grupo.
El cuarto sencillo lleva por título "Paradise City" y apareció en Estados Unidos el 30 de noviembre de 1988 (13 de marzo del año siguiente en Reino Unido). La canción, escrita en la parte trasera de su camioneta tras un concierto, es la única del álbum que hace uso del sintetizador y fue utilizada como cierre de conciertos en varias de sus giras. El vídeo, dirigido por Nigel Dick, fue grabado en dos escenarios diferentes, el estadio Giants Stadium de Nueva Jersey, durante la gira de Guns N 'Roses con Aerosmith y en el festival Monsters of Rock Donington Park, ante miles de espectadores.
El quinto y último sencillo de este álbum se titula "Nightrain". Publicado el 29 de julio de 1989. el título hace referencia a una marca de vino barata y de alta graduación, Night Train, que la banda solía beber en la época en que no tenían demasiado dinero. El tema era uno de los imprescindibles en los conciertos de la banda y es una de las favoritas de Slash.
