"Kerplunk" es el segundo álbum de Green Day, lanzado el 17 de diciembre de 1991 por Lookout Records y producido por Andy Ernst. contando con Al Sobrante como productor ejecutivo.
Este fue el último disco de Green Day en un sello independiente antes de cobijarse bajo el paraguas de una gran discográfica y también fue el primero en que participa el baterista Tré Cool.
En su momento, el disco fue prohibido en algunas tiendas, al mostrar la imagen de una niña con un arma recién disparada en la mano. En la contraportada, por el contrario, aparece un niño tirado en el suelo con una herida de bala en la espalda.
En su primer día en el mercado, se vendieron más de cien mil copias de este álbum. En la actualidad se calcula que se han vendido más de cuatro millones de copias en todo el mundo, estando considerado como uno de los álbumes independientes más vendidos en la historia.
Todas las letras del álbum "Kerplunk" fueron escritas por Billie Joe Armstrong excepto "Dominated Love Slave", que fue escrita por la nueva incorporación, Tré Cool.
La primera edición en vinilo incluyó doce temas, añadiendo cuatro más para la edición en CD, incluida una versión del tema de la banda británica The Who titulado, "My Generation".
El tema "Welcome to Paradise" aparecía como tercer corte de este álbum, aunque posteriormente se regrabó y se añadió como quinta pista del siguiente álbum de Green Day, "Dookie", aprovechando para lanzarlo también como sencillo.
"Kerplunk" fue reeditado en 2005 por Reprise Records, debido al impago de los derechos por parte de su anterior sello, Lookout.
