El primer álbum de Bob Marley junto a su remodelada banda, The Wailers, aparece en 1974 bajo el sello Island. Con producción de Chris Blackwell junto a The Wailers, el disco aparece tras el abandono de la banda por parte de Peter Tosh y Bunny Livigston, por la creciente presión y el estrés generado por las giras y la presión del éxito.Los temas del álbum rebosan energía por los cuatro costados, desde su primera canción, "Lively Up Yourself", con mensajes de hondo calado político, como en los temas "Them Belly Full", "Rebel Music", "Talkin Blues" o "Revolution", que hicieron tambalear los pilares de la política jamaicana.
El álbum incluye una versión en directo del tema "No Woman, No Cry", que le valió a Marley para conseguir colocarse en el top ten de las listas británicas. La canción fue escrita por Bob Marley, pero este la acreditó a Vincent Ford, un granjero que le ofreció alojamiento y comida cuando era joven y andaba necesitado. Por ese motivo, en señal de agradecimiento, en todos los créditos aparece el nombre de Ford.
La vitalidad de los temas de este poderoso "Natty Dread" se vio beneficiada por las bases rítmicas de los hermanos Barret, junto a la guitarra de Al Anderson y las magníficas voces de las denominadas i-Threes, Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths y Judy Mowatt.
