"Queen II" fue el primer éxito de la banda británica liderada por Freddie Mercury. El éxito de este segundo álbum propició que su álbum debut, "Queen", fuera revisado por el público y entrara igualmente en las listas británicas.
Grabado en los londinenses Trident Studios en agosto de 1973, el álbum se publicó el 8 de marzo de 1974 en Reino Unido y el 9 de abril del mismo año en Estados Unidos. La imagen de la portada es obra del popular fotógrafo británico Mick Rock, y fue reutilizada por la banda en posteriores ocasiones, como el vídeo de "I Want to Break free".
"Queen II" resultó un álbum con dos ambientes bien diferenciados, denominados popularmente como el lado blanco y el lado negro. El lado negro, con temas oscuros y más pesados, fue compuesto en su mayor parte por Freddie Mercury, con arreglos de piano y voces del propio Mercury.
Por otra parte, el lado blanco incluye temas más variados, con composiciones de Bryan May y Roger Taylor.
El tema que catapultó a la fama a Queen fue el titulado "Seven Seas Of Rhye", con el que la banda logró entrar en el top ten de las listas británicas, con un sonido arrollador en sus primeros veinte segundos, para dar paso posteriormente a las voces.
